Mesa Airlines and The Mesa Air Group – A Profitable Partnership

Partnerships hold a lot of power, in particular you see this in the aviation industry. Mesa Airlines learned this at an early stage, as they created their first code share partnership two years after they set up shop. They carried on pursing more alliances to ensure they would expand, and this became a signature move by them. They have over thirty years experience in operations in this sector, regardless of the fact that they are just an airline doing flights in the USA. After 2001, every single fiscal quarter brought a profit to Mesa Airlines. Below are some very interesting facts about the Mesa Air Group.

This airline is based out in Phoenix, Arizona and it charters flights in the US only. You will find information about the Mesa Air Group of which Mesa Airlines is an operational subsidiary. The Air Group consists of a number of airlines each of which is a separate entity with their own fleet, livery location and distinct name. For example, the Mesa Air Group provides air service as Mesa Airlines, United Express and the name – go! Mokulele has operations running in the islands of Hawaii. Mesa Airlines’ past is very varied but still very fascinating and the group continues to make a profit year after year.

Mesa Airlines has a number of “sister” airlines since they are all related through the Mesa Air Group.

The Hawaiian Islands are supplied by an airline delivery service known as Go! Mokulele. This partner airline operates a separate fleet of Bombardier CRJ 200 aircraft, and they fly out of their hub in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mesa collaborated with Mokulele Airlines in 2006 and shortly after “go” came into play. This assures service to the islands that would otherwise not be available for the landing of larger planes.

In January of 2011, Mesa entered into Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring which actually turned into the shortest process for any airline since it lasted only three short months. Mesa eliminated 100 planes and their leases from their fleet during these three months. The action Mesa took was very strategic because it allowed them to be free of the debt the aircraft had attached to them. They also decided to refinance their Bombardier CRJ200 aircraft as well as their Dash 8 aircraft. The result of doing this was a decrease in their debt, which had come about through renewed leases, and they also reduced the costs of their fleet.

To fully appreciate Mesa Airlines you must take a step back and look at their entire history. The airline has had ups, like expanding, and downs, like contracting, as part of decisions made by the company. Both the global and national economic trends are closely watched by airlines, as they must adapt when something happens. Due to them following the economic waves carefully they see good times and also bad times. I certainly think it’s fascinating how airlines form alliances with each other to help each other out in difficult times. It all makes perfect sense, as larger numbers means more power.
